I’m supposed to be worrying about the play which opens in ten days time but instead there’s been another launch to sort out. With a bump and a shove and lurch from Frankie’s Land Rover Gypsy Roma finally went into the water at about 12.30.

We then spent an hour or so struggling to work out what all the ropes did and how to raise the mast while a whole posse of geese hooted derisively.

With a little help from the guys from the boatyard we managed.  Then it was just a question of firing up the engine and heading out on our maiden voyage – a trip of about 50 yards to our mooring.  There was a strong breeze blowing us onto the quay heading. Trying to abort the first approach I made a pig’s ear of it and clouted a large cruiser. Second time it went more smoothly. I wanted to pull out and try it again but that seemed like pushing my luck so instead we opened the Leff, broke out the cheese and celebrated.

We have a boat. And she’s on the water. Now I just have to learn to sail it.
