Out to the river with our garden produce quiche eager to try out the boat now the rigging was where it ought to be. We loaded up and motored out to Horsey Mere where we sat on the mudweight for half an hour and had lunch. Then we took a deep breath and hoisted the sails. And for the very first time we heard the water chuckle along the hull as she moved forward. This was why we’d bought her. We were sailing our own boat. We came about and the mast snapped.
Cue Tony and Kate floundering on deck trying to get the sails under control and lash everything down. We motored back looking pretty sorry for ourselves. So a shortish first sail. Less than a minute I’d say. Things can only get better.
